This historic town is located between the Loire and Thouet rivers, a commune in western France. The architectural character of the town, predominately white, owes much to the fact that it is constructed almost exclusively of the beautiful, but fragile Tuffeau stone. Seen for miles when approaching, on a hill high above the town, is the great Chateau, open to the public throughout the year, with guides to tell of it’s chequered history, a visit is a must not least for the view.
Saumur is internationally known as an equestrian centre, home to the National School of Horsemanship and Cadre Noir, who put on annual horse shows. There is a strong military presence in the town with the Cavalry and Armoured Vehicle Training establishments, and a Tank Museum displaying more than 850 armoured vehicles.
A great place to visit with fine restaurants, hotels and shops. A great touring centre for exploring the beautiful French villages and chateaux along the Loire. The town surrounded by vineyards is in the centre of an area producing some of France’s finest wines.
